Azure Region Pair is a concept in Microsoft Azure, which refers to a pair of Azure regions within the same geography, such as East US and East US 2, that are set up to provide data residency, replication, and disaster recovery capabilities for Azure services and data.
In a region pair, one region is designated as the primary region, and the other is designated as the secondary region. Azure services that support geo-replication are designed to replicate data between these two regions asynchronously or synchronously, depending on the service.
The purpose of having a region pair is to provide high availability and disaster recovery for applications and data running on Azure. If an unexpected event, such as a natural disaster, disrupts the primary region, the secondary region can take over, ensuring that data and services remain available. Additionally, data residency requirements can be satisfied by storing data in both regions of the pair, providing customers with more control over where their data is stored and processed.
It's worth noting that not all Azure regions have a region pair, and some regions may have multiple pairs. Customers can choose to deploy their resources in a specific region pair or distribute them across multiple pairs, depending on their business needs and compliance requirements.
