An Availability Set is a logical grouping of virtual machines in Microsoft Azure that helps ensure high availability and resiliency of applications. When you create an Availability Set, Azure distributes your virtual machines across multiple update domains and fault domains.
Update domains represent a logical grouping of virtual machines that are updated and rebooted together during planned maintenance events to ensure that at least one instance of your application remains available. By distributing your virtual machines across different update domains, you can avoid having all your virtual machines offline at the same time.
Fault domains represent a physical grouping of virtual machines that share a common power source and network switch. By distributing your virtual machines across different fault domains, you can ensure that a single point of failure in a datacenter does not affect all the virtual machines in your Availability Set.
When you place your virtual machines in an Availability Set, Azure ensures that no two virtual machines are placed in the same update or fault domain. This provides redundancy and high availability for your applications, helping to minimize downtime during both planned and unplanned maintenance events.
